There where talks about moving to AA. You also have to remember all numbers for schools in swva where a lot higher than they are now. No different than now. Richlands and Tazwell have the number now to drop if they wanted to.

Re: lets shut JJ Kelly down and send the students to the other schools

Since the BOS would approve three new schools.

I believe there was one plan to build 2 new schools and upgrade Coeburn.

As everything else it was smashed as well.

In my opioion this has been done all wrong. It has been more of a ****tatership than anything.

The bad thing is they have jerked every student and teacher around. Its just not right.

Put it to a vote of the people to get the majority. If they say keep them open then do it. If they say build 3 new schools then do it. If they say shut 3 smaller schools down then do it.

That was before "equal thirds", wasn't it? The cut-off was 500. The Wise numbers were inflated because of the alt ed, or what ever. Wise and PV had little more than 500 kids. I still don't care, the schools need fixed/replaced and don't care to fuss about the things from 10 yrs ago.

I say build the 3 schools on 3 sites. If it raises taxes then so be it. It's for the kids!!!!!!!!

It's not like our taxes around here are sky high.

Can't speak for what happened at Kelly but at PV there were 800 plus at times due to 8th grade being there too. For sports classification only 10th-12th was ever counted, so it was pretty easy to have 300 or so in 8th and 9th grades and only 500 in 10th-12th. Still make A class but have 800 in school.

Yes simple man, poking at the boards and the people who actually stood up at the SB meeting and said this not being sarcastic

And classes were where? Closets and basements? Basham said the extra kids (03 or 04) would be housed in trailers on the parking lot, in his "Just close Appy" idea. The folks that want schools, will have to run thru these boards and pay for our schools, if we want them. I don't care if my county taxes double to get this fixed.

I was there (PV) during that time, about 800 total students and it didn't seem overcrowded to me? We also were not allowed to wear shorts and days were never shortened for heat.

Unless they have classrooms that they no longer use for some reason there is plenty of space.

Kelly was actually moved to AA once, but they said the numbers weren't accurate, re-did them, and came up just short of AA. Don't rem. when that was or when the switch to thirds was made, though.

Re: lets shut JJ Kelly down and send the students to the other schools

I'm not sure if everyone on here are aware of the new format for football this fall.

It's my understanding that if they don't change the names of the school they will stay in the Divisions that they are slated. Only PV was slated for D 2. Everyone else was D 1.

If the names change the three schools will go to D 2. So the Vhsl will have there work cut out for them.

I was looking at how the state is divided up and i would say some schools will be moved to the other half of the state in D 2 and some from the other side of the state will be moved into this side of the state in D 1.
